Longhorn 2008 Commitment List

Applewhite is coming home

What an off-season it's been for the Texas Longhorns. Two weeks ago, Mack Brown lured top-flight Auburn defensive coordinator Will Muschamp to Austin, and this week he again dipped into the state of Alabama for an assistant coach. Longhorn legend Major Applewhite has agreed to join the Texas staff as running backs coach and assistant head coach, culminating a furious week of rumors and speculation. We've got a full rundown of how the hiring went down inside.

Houck Returning To Cowboys As Offensive Line Coach

In a four-day span since losing their divisional-round playoff game to the Giants, the Cowboys lost offensive line/assistant head coach Tony Sparano to Miami and drew a deep sigh of relief when offensive coordinator Jason Garrett rebuffed head-coaching offers from Atlanta and Baltimore.Garrett will assume Sparano's title of assistant head coach, and Hudson Houck's hiring as offensive line coach Friday preserves some continuity even though he's not an incumbent staff member. That's because Dallas is home to Houck. The 25-year NFL assistant held the same position from 1993-2001, coaching a Cowboys line which paved gaping holes for Emmitt Smith on two Super Bowl teams.

Texas, Texas A&M asked to move game to Thanksgiving

Texas and Texas A&M have been asked by ESPN to move their annual football rivalry to Thanksgiving in 2008, according to UT senior associate athletic director Nick Voinis.

Voinis said Monday Texas officials are considering the move to Thursday, Nov. 27, but have not made any final decision.
Currently, that game in Austin is scheduled to be played on either Friday, Nov. 28, or Saturday, Nov. 29. The last time Texas and A&M played on Thanksgiving was 1992 – a 34-13 victory by the Aggies in Austin. Texas has a 40-18-2 record against A&M on Thanksgiving.

Matt Flynn Signs with Agent

LSU senior Matt Flynn has signed with Profile Sports from Atlanta, Georgia. Their two big-bangers are Pat Dye and Bill Johnson, both, very well respected among the agent community, and by the N.F.L.. Brian Urlacher is one of their most high-profile clients.
One of their first decisions is telling Matt “not” to play in this weekend’s East-West Shrine Game in Houston.
And, it appears as though Matt won’t even go through workouts either. The main reason to pull out of the game, it’s a precautionary reason with his shoulder still sore from the injury against Arkansas back in December.
Flynn will fly back to Baton Rouge sometime early this week, and then head for Orlando, Florida to begin workouts towards the February NFL Combine.

Robert E. Lee Stars lead LSU to National Championship

Both LSU quarterback Matt Flynn and offensive tackle Ciron Black are members of the Tiger’s All-State BCS National Championship Team.
In fact, Flynn, who completed 19-of-27 passes for 174-yards and 4-TD’s, was named the games most outstanding offensive player.
He former teammate at Tyler Lee, Ciron Black said it couldn’t happen to a better guy, “He has been the ultimate teammate, his patience has been amazing, and I’m so proud of him.”
Meanwhile Black, who won a Class 5-A State Championship at Robert E. Lee said it was another memorable night, “I can’t compare the two, both championships will be memorable for me, the state championship in San Antonio against Spring Westfield…but this–this came in front of millions of people, and we showed the country who is number one tonight, with no doubt.”
This is the third-consecutive year an East Texan has been apart of a national championship team.
Last year, was former Longview Lobo Tate Casey with Florida, and former John Tyler stars Aaron Ross and Tim Crowder won rings in 2005 at Texas, as did Tyler Lee’s Nic Redwine.
